Read Luke 9:18-20
“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”
Luke 9:20
Jesus is in the region of Caesarea Philippi. Today the place is called Banais and we will be visiting it tomorrow. Here many pagan gods were worshipped - from pan to the imperial cult of the Roman Emperor. Surrounded by images of false gods, the true God wants to be sure his followers understand who He really is. Some questions are more important than others, and this one is the top. Each of us must answer this question not just theologically but with how we live our lives. This is what it means to be called.
Peter proclaims Jesus as the awaited Messiah, Cristos in Greek which means the “anointed one”. We are called Christians because we too have been anointed and empowered by the Holy Spirit as tomorrow's theme for the pilgrimage reminds us.
Lord, any the beginning of this pilgrimage, may you help me hear your call deep within my heart and enable me to say once again that you are indeed my Lord and my God.
