Read Luke 8:16-18
Therefore consider carefully how you listen
Like the seed, the lamp is an image for God’s word : “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (Ps 119:105). Thus, the person who when hearing God’s word, embraces and understands it is filled with light and becomes a visible lamp so that others may see the light and draw closer to the Lord. This sharing of taith / light is beautifully declared by Peter, “As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.” (Acts 4:20)
So much depends on how one listens to the word of God. “Selective hearing” is part of our human nature, where we tend to listen more to the things we like or the things we want to hear. We have all had times where, for one reason or another, we don’t want to hear the difficult word Jesus may be speaking in our lives.
Lord Jesus, let my heart be open to Your Spirit, my ears open to Your Word, and my mind open to Your truth. Let Your Word motivate my words and actions today — at home, in the workplace, and throughout this coming pilgrimage.
