Power of the Most High

Read Luke 1:26-38

Focal Verse

"The angel answered, 'The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God’"

Luke 1:35

Bible Study

Even if you have never read this passage before we certainly have seen it in films, on Christmas cards and plays. That is why it is easier for us to to over-romanticise it and to forget the utter shock it must have been to Mary and eventually Joseph to hear what the angel had to say. God not only upset their plans with an unimaginable gift but saying yes was to cause them some difficulties. In a tight knit religious society, how do you explain that you are yet unmarried and pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit? Yet this is what the implications were for this young couple. However they obeyed God and through Our Lady, Jesus our Saviour came into the world.

Key Word: "Dunamis"

Dunamis means ‘power'. In other words, in front of all our ‘impossible situations’ whether in our hearts, our lives and our outreach to others, the power of the Holy Spirit makes possible what is otherwise impossible.

Reflection and Application

Our Lady’s response was to say a complete yes to God. Listen to what God is telling you and ask Him for the grace to respond wholeheartedly to His will.

Lord, in front of all my ‘how-could-this-be-questions’, your answer is still the same: the Holy Spirit will take care of you, the power of God will work in you, surrender to my will.’
