A Personal ‘power’
Many people are looking for an energy or a supernatural power to help them in life. However what we really need has been found? He is God’s amazing gift, the Holy Spirit, who comes to dwell in us. He is not an impersonal force but the third Person of the Trinity who knows you and loves you. He indeed brings us the power of God but we must never forget that he is God Himself.
Hearts not Stone
It is very interesting to note that the Holy Spirit first came to the disciples on the Jewish Feast of Pentecost. This feast commemorated the event when God gave Moses gave the Ten Commandments to give to the people of Israel. As we know they were written on tablets of stone. In Pentecost the law of God is now written in our hearts.
‘This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.’ Jer. 31:33
The Spirit comes to live in us for many reasons. It was always God’s intention to bring us into a close relationship with Him. This will be experienced at its fullest in heaven for all eternity. For now we begin to live a bit of that reality. When you go to order something you may be asked to leave a deposit as a guarantee of the fact that you will buy and the seller will give you the thing you want. The Holy Spirit is the first guarantee that heaven has now come to us so we can go to heaven
‘He put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.’ 2 Cor. 1:22
He is also called the Paracletos. ‘But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.’ John 14:26 In Greek this refers to someone who comes to stand by you, who defends you. The Holy Spirit has the job of ‘defending us’ against the attacks of the devil and against our own doubts regarding the love of God.
‘Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” Gal. 4:6
Chaos into Cosmos
Once the Holy Spirit is God it means that He brings us all that God is. If God is Holy then He brings us the beauty, peace and happiness of being like Him. He literally turns our chaos into cosmos and order as He did when the earth itself was created. These are called the fruit of the Spirit ‘But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.’ Gal. 5:22,23 . As all fruit takes time to ripen, so these take time until they show up more and more in our lives but they will be clear signs that we are living ‘in the Spirit.
Don’t Grieve Him
Of course because the Holy Spirit is God we can also grieve Him and sadden him with our sin especially if that sin is grave. ‘And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God’ Eph. 4:30 Thank God His job is also to convict us of sins so that we can turn to Jesus and ask Him for mercy and grace.
Dynamite Power to Share
Last of all the Holy Spirit equips us to overcome our fear and to give witness to Jesus and to evangelise, that is to share our faith with others. ‘But you will receive power (dunamis – dynamite) when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8 The Holy Spirt brings healing, freedom and deliverance to God’s people who are open and ask Him with faith.
So remember to pray daily to the Holy Spirt. It’s quite simple to start with ‘Come Holy Spirit’ especially when you receive the Eucharist
